KDAL radio and television records

 Collection
Identifier: S3117

Scope and Contents

The collection contains short scripts written about the local history of the Duluth, Minnesota region, photographs believed to be connected with the scripts, one sound recording of nine episodes of Duluth's Heritage, advisory board minutes from 1969-1970, and publicity material, 1969.

The scripts, nearly all written for radio, were authored by Gil Fawcett. Included are 1,187 episodes of Duluth Diary, 1947-1952; 50 episodes of the Duluth centennial feature Duluth by Decades, 1956; a folder of the Minnesota state centennial feature Memories of Minnesota, 1958; a three year series called Historic Site Ahead, 1943-1946; and miscellaneous radio and TV scripts. The photographs appear to be copies of historic shots of Duluth and vicinity. The sound recordings, which are not dated, feature Paul Richardson reading excerpts from Duluth's Heritage, a series based on Historic Site Ahead scripts.

Biographical / Historical

KDAL radio (610 AM) began broadcasting in Duluth, Minnesota on November 22, 1936. It was established by Dalton LeMasurier and owned by the Red River Broadcasting Company. In August, 1937, the station became an affiliate of the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). KDAL television (channel 3) began operations in 1954. Both KDAL radio and TV were sold to WGN Continental Broadcasting Company of Chicago, Illinois in 1960. In 1978 a government ruling ordered separate ownership of the radio and television operations. WGN retained possession of the radio station and KDAL-TV became KDLH-TV.
