Biographical / Historical
A Duluth, Minnesota organization, the Joint Committee of Civic Organizations for Steel Base was an organization of the Duluth Commercial Club, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Duluth Board of Realtors, Duluth Retail Merchants Association, Builders Exchange, and the West Duluth, West End and New Duluth-Gary Commercial Clubs. The Committee, headed by Charles P. Craig, was formed in 1918 to stop steel manufacturers from fixing steel pricess for all sections of the country at the price charged in Pittsburgh, plus freight costs. This system, termed “Pittsburgh Plus” was attacked by many steel centers, notably Chicago, Birmingham, and Duluth. The Federal Trade Commission abolished the practice in 1924.
