The League of Women Voters of the United States was “designed to succeed” the National American Women Suffrage Association. The League was formed to teach women the mechanics of voting and to enlighten them upon current issues. Today its membership is open to both men and women. The League has local chapters in all fifty states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

The League of Women Voters of the United States is a non-partisan organization. Its members, who join at the local level, study local, state, and national issues, coming to a consensus (represented by majority and minority reports) on the position the League will take on each.
