Biographical / Historical

The Marvin family has been involved with Duluth's history from its beginnings. A complete genealogical sketch does not exist at this time, and there has been some confusion over members of the family as there are three Luke Marvins: Luke, Luke A., and Luke E.  Luke Marvin (1820-1880) and MaryAnn Collins Marvin (1826-1889) are the original settlers, founders of the First Presbyterian Church, and are both buried in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Marvin was appointed Register of Land Office in Duluth, was auditor of St. Louis County, and in 1871, member of the state legislature. He was post master of Duluth in 1875 and instrumental in securing the rail connection between St. Paul and Duluth. The Marvins had ten children, eight of whom were still living in 1879 (U.S. Biographical Dictionary of Minnesota).  Richard F. and Luke Arthur were the elder brothers, Luke Edward, William F., John Walter, Mary B., and Watson W. are the siblings named in various sources within the papers. Luke Edward Marvin is the son of Luke Arthur and Frances Lois Rice Marvin, referred to as Ned.
