Biographical / Historical

The Minnesota Arrowhead Association was founded in 1924 under the name Civic and Commerce Association of Northeastern Minnesota. Its purpose has been to bring coooperation to civic groups working together to promote and advertise the recreational and agricultural resources of the region.

In July 1924 in Hibbing, the Civic and Commerce Association of Northeastern Minnesota consisted of representatives of fifteen commercial organizations throughout the counties of Cook, Lake, St. Louis, Carlton, Itasca, Aitkin, Koochiching, Beltrami, Crow Wing, Hubbard, and Cass. Temporary officers were elected: James H. Harper of Duluth, president; E.C. Kiley of Grand Rapids, vice president; Les Emery of Hibbing, secretary-treasurer. Executive committee members were W.F. Pellenz of Eveleth, G.H. Lommen of Biwabik, Kiley, Emery, Harper, Hanford Cox of Cloquet, P.H. Martin of West Duluth, Peter Schaeffer of Ely and George F. Peterson of Cook.

The group formally organized at a meeting at Esquagama Lake on July 24, 1924, and offices were established at 315 West Superior Street in Duluth. The membership went on record at that meeting "to boost the St. Lawrence Seaway and to advertise over the U.S. the lakes, mountains, and beauty spots of the region so that the area would take on a national aspect as a recreational center; to encourage building of summer hotels... golf courses, bridle paths, and dance pavilions; to boost reforestation; to encourage a program of winter sports."

The Minnesota Arrowhead Assocation was formed to achieve cooperation among civic groups working to promote and advertise the recreational and agricultural resources of the region. It includes from Cook, Lake, St. Louis, Carlton, Itasca, Aitkin, Koochiching, Beltrami, Crow Wing, Hubbard, and Cass counties.
