Scope and Contents

The collection contains photographic prints and glass plates of Duluth and surrounding areas. Prints of all glass plates found in this collection are available in boxes 1-6, some plates do not have corresponding prints.

The photographic prints are divided into twelve subject areas. They are:

The prints are arranged in numerical order by the number McKenzie assigned to them. Prints unnumbered by McKenzie were given numbers preceded by an asterisk (*1) and appear at the end of each subject category.

Biographical / Historical

Hugh McKenzie was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He came to Duluth, Minnesota in 1902 after an apprenticeship in Winona, Minnesota and experience running a studio in Litchfield, Minnesota. Owner of Mckenzie Studio, he worked as a photographer in Duluth from 1902-1947. He first worked as a photographer for J.R. Zweiffel in Duluth from 1902 until 1905. In 1906, he opened his own studio, known as McKenzie Commercial and Landscape Photography, in which he specialized in commercial photography. McKenzie was married to Winnifred Ruggles in 1910. He retired in 1947 due to failing health.
