Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence, business letters and greeting cards, 1895–1928, news clippings of obituaries and biographical articles, 1914–1953, copies of biographical newspaper clippings (photocopies from one of the scrapbooks, 1910–1926), photographs of Meining with unidentified men boating and at a cabin, as well as portraits, 1894–1922. Family/Duluth and area scrapbook, 1894-1928, contains news clippings largely of obituaries and biographical articles of area people, 1894–1928.

Scrapbook Volume 1, 1912-1921, is only newspaper clippings related to military topics, events, groups, and issues mainly dealing with World War I.

Scrapbook Volume 2, 1917, was loaned to the Minnesota War Records Commission that includes correspondence to or from Sheriff Meining regarding his cooperation in "…precautions about acts hostile to the interests and welfare of the people and the Government of the United States…detaining those whose disposition is unfriendly to the United States…"; military conscription and implementing procedures and using forms; registrant's Questionnaire; Selective Service Act of May 18, 1917; Oaths of Members of Registrations Boards; Order 8, regulating sale of intoxicating liquor outside of Duluth to licensed saloons and drug stores only; June 10, 1917 arrest order for persons who did not register, enforcement of the penal clause;  June 13 and June 16 telegrams from Sheriff Meining to Minnesota Adjutant General Fred B. Wood about 'slackers' at the jail and specifically 15 "Finlanders"; June 14 letter to Minnesota Commission of Public Safety about a large shipment of wine in the D&IR Railway Co. at the Aurora Station bound for boarding houses; June 26 telegram from the Mayor of Ely naming a Virginia, Minnesota man as a shipper of liquor; selling liquor at the Iroquois Club.

Biographical / Historical

John R. Meining, one of three sons and four daughters of Johanna and Louis W. Meining, arrived in Duluth in 1869. He engaged in the hardware business, Meining & Hathaway, 522 West Superior street, from 1880–1896, when the building and stock were destroyed by fire. Meining was a traveling salesman for the Duluth Candy Co. from 1898 until 1911, and served briefly as a deputy sheriff.  In 1911 he was elected sheriff of St. Louis County. His term ran through 1912, and he was reelected to serve 1914 to 1918. His wife, Augusta M. Meining, born in Henderson, Minnesota, resided in Duluth for 62 years. A member of Holy Rosary Catholic church, she died in 1942 at the age of 85. John Meining was a member of Knights of Pythias, Independent of Order of Red Men, United Commercial Travelers, Old Settlers' Association (Presidential Elect in 1925) and Moose Lodge.
