Biographical / Historical
Duluthian Oscar Frederick Nelson was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. The award was given January 6, 1906.
Rank and organization: Machinist's Mate First Class, U.S. Navy. Citation: Serving on board the U.S.S. Bennington, for extraordinary heroism displayed at the time of the explosion of a boiler of that vessel at San Diego, Calif., 21 July 1905. There were 65 dead and 49 injured out of 182 officers and men. Accredited to: Minnesota. G.O. No.: 13, 5 January 1906.
Nelson was born on November 5 1881, in Minneapolis, Minnesota and died Sept. 26, 1951 in a Minneapolis hospital.
