The collection consists of 104 primarily unidentified small photographs, glued to black photo album paper, that depict Selma Johnson as an employee at Nopeming tuberculosis sanitarium casually or on-duty with other people employees or patients residing there for care. Nopeming staff, facilities, and grounds are shown.

Biographical / Historical
Selma Johnson Niemi worked at Nopeming tuberculosis sanitarium in Duluth about 1914 as a cook when she was 16 or 17 years old. She married David Niemi in 1914 who was a recent immigrant from Finland. They lived in Bovey, Minnesota, and David worked for the Oliver Iron Mining Company. They moved to Trout Lake where they bought a farm. In 1976 they moved to Grand Rapids. David Niemi died in 1977. They had five children: Lila (-1916), Art (-1976), Ed (-1989), Clifford, and Evelyn. Selma died at age 92 in 1991, at Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and interment at Lakeview Cemetery in Coleraine, Minnesota.
