Biographical / Historical
Stephanie Hemphill has been a reporter for Minnesota Public Radio since 2000. She reported from Duluth for seven years; in 2007 she was transferred to St. Paul to take on the environment beat. She covers resource issues, water quality, and climate change, with a concentration on energy policy. She has reported for National Public Radio, the Great Lakes Radio Consortium, and other regional and national outlets. She has received numerous awards from state and regional journalism organizations.
"In the 1970's and 1980's, a few women were hired to drive trucks and dig iron ore in northern Minnesota's enormous pit mines. For many, it was their first taste of true economic independence. When some of their male co-workers tried to drive them out with harassment, threats and assaults, the women fought back with the first class-action sexual harassment lawsuit in the country. "No Place For A Woman", a documentary from American RadioWorks, tells the dramatic, moving story of women who broke down barriers in a field wholly dominated by men." [from CD wrapper], 55 minutes
