Biographical / Historical

Charles More was born in Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa, the son of a Methodist minister. When he was 17, his father’s death occasioned his accepting a position in a drug store. He studied and registered as a pharmacist by examination. As this introduced him to a number of doctors, he then took up the study of medicine. A graduate of the Chicago Medical College, More  was a classmate and long time friend of Charles H. Mayo. More spent time in Two Harbors, Minnesota in 1888 and then in Ely, Minnesota in 1889–1894 prior to settling in Eveleth, Minnesota in 1894. He established the More Hospital in 1895 in his home, and a separate facility in 1900 with an addition in 1905. More served more than 40 years as mine physician for the Oliver Mining Company, was a member of the Eveleth School Board for 16 years, served the Library Board and the St. Louis County Poor Commission. He retired in 1943, and died in 1949.
