Biographical / Historical

The Northeast Minnesota Historical Center was established as the eighth regional research center in the state of Minnesota for the purpose of collecting, preserving and making available to the public for research use the documentary records of the Arrowhead region of the state including St. Louis, Cook, Lake, and Carlton counties. The Center was established in December 1976, and opened to the public in March 1977.

Administrative responsibility for the Center changed over time with the participation of the Minnesota Historical Society, the University of Minnesota Duluth, and the St. Louis County Historical Society. In 2011 responsibility for Center collections was assumed by the Archives and Special Collections unit of the Kathryn A. Martin Library at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
