Scope and Contents

The collection includes 12 journals of expenditures or bills paid to local suppliers of goods and services, receipts, and monthly payroll records. The ledgers also include some years of payroll, naming the employee and giving their job title.

The collection also contains a history of Northwood Children’s Home, by-laws, 1907 annual report, brochure, and news clippings. There are no clients, families nor children listed in these records with one exception: there is a 1907 list in the matron’s annual report of 12 children who died.

The records also reflect the transition in the 1950s from Duluth Children's Home to a new mission for the organization as well as a new name.

Biographical / Historical

The Children’s Home Society, Inc. was founded in 1883 as the Ladies Relief Society. Its initial purpose was to provide relief for young pioneer women with infants.  In 1885, the shelter was moved to a new location at 1530 West Superior Street at Rice’s Point and became formally known as the “Home for Women and Children”. In 1887 it was incorporated as the Duluth Home Society, retaining the same goals and adding new facilities. In 1904 the society became the Children’s Home Society constructed a new home at 1515 East Fifth Street for the care of "needy children".

In 1951 a major revision of the society’s goals occurred, with the result being a new emphasis on care of children, ages 6-11 at the time of their admission, with emotional problems. It currently continues in this capacity, and in 1956 constructed and occupied, a new facility at the cost of $350,000, at 714 College Street where it is presently located. In 1967 a $96,000, 4-room school was built. On June 14, 1971 the name was changed to Northwood Children’s Home Society, Inc. The organization is currently known as Northwood Children's Services.
