Ojibwe Census records
Scope and Contents
A census is an official count of the population that records specific information. Census rolls were usually submitted each year by agents or superintendents in charge of Indian reservations, to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, as required by an act of July 4, 1884 (23 Stat. 98). The data on the rolls vary to some extent, but usually given are the English and/or Indian name of the person, roll number, age or date of birth, sex, and relationship to head of family.
The collection contains photocopied census records of the La Pointe Agency, Ashland WI, 1898-1902. Census for: Bad River, June 30, 1899; Fond du Lac, June 30, 1898; Grand Portage, June 30, 1885, 1905, June 30, 1915; Lac du Flambeau, June 30, 1899; and Red Cliff, June 30, 1899 all from microfilm number 576, 927, roll 238 of the Genealogical Society of Utah.
A photocopied 1885 Minnesota State census of inhabitants of Grand Marais, Cook County, Minnesota. Source of this census on microfilm is not known.
St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin “final roll” photocopy from the U. S. Congress, report submitted December 7, 1914, with covering letter dated march 3, 1915, printed in House of Representatives, document No. 1663.
