Old Settlers Association of the Head of Lake Superior records
Scope and Contents
The collection contains scrapbooks, news clippings, membership card file, reminiscences, financial and legal materials, photographs, and reference materials. A four page address by William C. Sargent on Early Settlers on Minnesota Point is included. The scrapbooks, 1902-1958, contain newspaper obituaries of area residents and the membership card file includes address, birth and death information for each member. Box 2 contains two large scrapbooks, 1902-1929; the card file is in two drawers in alphabetical sequence. Old Settlers Officers' Portraits volume, December, 1919 includes past Presidents and Secretaries.

Biographical / Historical
The Old Settlers Association of the Head of Lake Superior was organized in February, 1886 and incorporated in 1909 as a social and historical club. Any person who had resided in the region for at least twenty-five years was eligible to join. The association disbanded in 1946.
The Old Settlers Benefit Association was a subgroup of the Old Settlers Association. It was essentially a life insurance cooperative paid into by members of the Old Settlers for benefits to be paid at the time of a member’s death.
