Biographical / Historical

The Oliver Iron and Steel Company was founded in 1892 by Henry W. Oliver. It was located in the Eveleth, Mt. Iron, and Virginia areas of Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range. In 1898 the company was reorganized and the name was changed to Oliver Iron Mining Company. Henry Oliver shared half interest in his company with Andrew Carnegie until 1901, when Oliver Iron Mining became a subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation, eventually becoming a division of U.S. Steel. Oliver Iron Mining Division, United States Steel Corporation, had its headquarters at Virginia, Minnesota and later at Hibbing, Minnesota. The division continued operations until 1964, when it became Minnesota Ore Operations, United States Steel Corporation.
