Biographical / Historical

A freelance writer residing in Duluth, Olsen's "OUT OF ORDER: A Voter's Chronicle of Duluth City Council Proceedings" since 1999, is a twice monthly column in Duluth's alternative press newspaper Reader Weekly. Born in Duluth, Olsen grew up in Homecroft and Central Hillside attending Washington Junior and Central High schools. Her family moved to Fridley, Minnesota where she completed high school. She returned to Duluth to attend UMD and was News Director and Morning Program Director for KUMD-FM followed by work with WDIO-TV as photographer, reporter and anchor. She moved to the Seattle, Washington area in 1980, returning again to Duluth in the late 1990s. Active in local politics, she founded the Duluth Public-Policy Alliance, a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting open government and responsible city planning. She co-founded Progressive Action in 2003, formed after the death of Senator Paul Wellstone to help carry on his progressive goals in areas like housing and living wages, serving as President of the organization in 2004.

Ms. Olsen's readers call her affectionately "a cheeky troublemaker".  She has been voted Best Nespaper Columnist in the Northland reapeatedly.
