Biographical / Historical

The Northern Environmental Council (NOREC) was organized in 1969 as an umbrella organization for 32 regional civic, religious, educational, and outdoor organizations interested in environmental issues. The oranization's primary objective was to increase public awareness regarding environmental problems and to act as a lobbying task force to correct them. In February 1977, NOREC voted to reorganize into a voluntary unincorporated association whose primary concern would be to function as coordinator for joint efforts by its participating member organizations on issues of common concern. However, the organization would no longer have a paid staff, nor would it conduct studies as it did in the past. Shortly thereafter, name was changed to Northern Environmental Committee.

Charles H. Stoddard was instrumental in organizing NOREC. Stoddard served as a director and as an environmental consultant.
