Biographical / Historical
The Northern Pacific Railroad was chartered in 1864 with the aim of providing a rail connection from the Great Lakes to the Pacific. Construction of the railroad began in 1870 at Thomson, Minnesota. Northern Pacific was backed by financier Jay Cooke until 1873 when it went bankrupt and was reorganized. The railroad was reorganized again in the early 1900s by James J. Hill. In 1970 Northern Pacific merged with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Great Northern, and Spokane, Portland and Seattle and their subsidiaries to become the Burlington Northern.
