Biographical / Historical
The Northland Country Club was founded in Duluth in 1899. The original officers were D.G. Cutler, G.G. Hartley, A.M. Miller, Jr., and E.P. Towne. The original clubhouse was burned in the 1918 forest fire; it was replaced with a larger, second, clubhouse building in 1922. That building was renovated in 1970, and then demolished in 2006. The current clubhouse was built in 2007 to resemble the 1922 building.
The golf course originally included land above and below Superior Street and golfers were required to make a shot across the street’s trolley line. The course was expanded to 18 holes in 1912. The club acquired land on the bluff above the course in 1921 and the course was renovated in 1927 by architect Donald J. Ross. Today’s course is essentially the same as the 1927 course.
