Northwest Missions papers

 Collection
Identifier: S3044

Scope and Contents

The collection contains typewritten copies of letters, diaries, church records and magazine articles relating to Protestant and Catholic missions in Minnesota and the Northwest. The copies were drawn from many sources, including the Minnesota Historical Society, the Quebec Archdiocese Episcopal Archives, and the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Letters of Northeastern Minnesota missionaries such as Sherman Hall, Edmund Ely, and William Lewis, may also be found. The records detail routine information about various missions, as well as information on native people, financial problems of the missions, and personal conflicts among the missionaries. Some of the records are written in French and German.

The collection represents a portion of a larger collection held by the Minnesota Historical Society. It was compiled during the late 1920s and early 1920s by Grace Lee Nute of the Minnesota Historical Society.
