Biographical / Historical
John H. Peterson, M.D, ophthalmologist, was a lifelong resident of Duluth, Minnesota, graduating from Duluth Central High school in 1926 and the University of Minnesota’s medical school. He was the son of John and Hannah Larsen Peterson. He worked as a general practitioner until enlisting in the U.S. Navy shortly before Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941. He received a Silver Star Medal for Bravery for distinguished service as a medical officer on the USS Hammann; he helped rescue shipmates after the destroyer was hit by torpedoes and sank June 6, 1942.
After the war he returned to the University of Minnesota completing his fellowship in ophthalmology. He practiced in Duluth for 30 years retiring in 1978. He was chief of staff at St. Luke’s Hospital in 1958. He was an avid hockey player and was honored as an All-American in 1933. He is featured in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota.
He married Barbara Currier in 1944. Barbara was a graduate of Morgan Park High school in Duluth who worked as a bookkeeper until her marriage. They had one daughter, Linda Ann, in 1947. Barbara Peterson died in 1979. Both John and Barbara are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
