Scope and Contents

The collection contains contracts, statements, correspondence, and biographical material. Most of the records concern Paine's interest in the Bay View Land Co. from 1894 through 1921, and a lawsuit against the Security Bank by the Mercantile Bank of New York in 1896.

Also included is correspondence, 1929-1931, with Mayor Samuel F. Snively concerning a proposed road near Lester River in Duluth, and a photograph of Frederic W. Paine.

Biographical / Historical

Frederic W. Paine was born in Niles, Michigan on September 14, 1856, the son of Rodney C. and Mary Elizabeth (Welles) Paine. In 1875, F. W. Paine worked for four years with the law firm of Taggart, Simonds and Fletcher in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The firm sent Paine to Duluth, Minnesota in 1880 to look after their interests in the Graff, Little and Co. saw mill. Paine soon formed the banking firm of Paine and Lardner, which became the Security Bank. The bank defaulted on its obligations and ceased operations in 1896. Paine later associated himself with the Equitable Life Insurance Co. and the Bay View Land Co. Paine was also active in many Duluth civic organizations until his death in 1940.
