Biographical / Historical

Established as a Sister City to Duluth in 1987, Petrozavodsk, like Duluth, has a history in mining and shipping. Petrozavodsk has a population of  266,000, and was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Petrozavodsk is situated on a large lake, Lake Onega, which has  waterfront lake walk similar to Duluth's with sculptures from its many Sister Cities. A sculpture from Petrozavodsk, “Green Bear,” is located in Lake Place Park in Duluth, “Fishermen,” is located on Petrozavodsk’s embankment.

Duluth News Tribune May 2, 1986 "Brooks Anderson of Duluth plans to lead a group to the Soviet Union this summer with hopes of establishing a sister-city relationship between Duluth and Petrozavodsk."
