Point of Rocks Removal collection
Scope and Contents
The collection contains printed materials issued "for" (Greater Duluth Committee, Emil S. Gustafson, chair and William McEwen, campaign manager) and "against" (The Committee of Two Thousand, W. B. Getchell, chair) a proposal to make traffic improvements at the Point of Rocks. The debate specifically involved the city of Duluth issuing bonds for $500,000 to fund the project. A "special election" would be held March 1, 1928, to approve the bonding, not for a specific plan for the work. Voters did not approve the bond issue for a Point of Rocks project.

Biographical / Historical
Archives staff sometimes receives donations of single items or small amounts of unrelated materials for the Northeast Minnesota Historical Center Collections. Staff have set up collections to group like materials that come from disparate sources.
The area between 8th and 13th Avenues West and Superior Street is the vicinity of what is called the Point of Rocks. The problem of a huge rock outcropping abutting Duluth's main street had been debated for decades. Problems were caused by rock falling into the roadway.
