Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence, articles written by Pardee, notes and other reference materials. Most of the material concerns Pardee's Duluth, Minnesota civic activities, including the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Tidewater Association correspondence (1918-1930), civic council material (1925-1928) and some correspondence and notes on "Pittsburg Plus" (1924-1927), an issue concerning unfair steel base prices.

The collection also includes addresses and articles written by Pardee, circa 1913-1930, and a scrapbook of Pardee's newspaper editorials, 1896-1930, written as The Eternal Optimist. His last letter, written on April 6, 1930, is in the folio scrapbook: he died on April 30, 1930.

Biographical / Historical

John Stone Pardee was born on December 8, 1863 in New Haven, Connecticut, son of Benjamin S. and Harriet (Gilbert) Pardee. He graduated from Yale in 1885 and came to Duluth, Minnesota to become editor of the News. In 1896, he established the Daily Commonwealth and then moved to Red Wing, Minnesota to publish the Goodhue County News. Pardee became a writer for the St. Paul Pioneer in 1905, but returend to Duluth two years later to serve as editor of the Star. Pardee was keenly interested in civic affairs and participated in many Duluth civic organizations, including the Commercial Club, 1908; the City Planning Commission, 1915; and the Public Safety Commission, 1917.

Pardee's excellent writing brought him to Washington, D.C. to conduct publicity work for Hoover's food administration. He also became publicity director of the U.S. Department of Treasury before returning to Duluth in 1919.

Upon his return, Pardee became assistant director of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Tidewater Association, an organization devoted to the establishment of the St. Lawrence Seaway. In 1928, he was appointed charter commissioner of Duluth. Pardee died on April 10, 1930, survived by his wife Laura (Peckham) Pardee, whom he had married in 1906.

Pardee was editor of many Minnesota newspapers, including the Duluth News, the Duluth Daily Commonwealth, the Goodhue County News, and the Duluth Star. He also was a writer for the St. Paul Pioneer. Pardee was an accomplished writer and publicity worker, two talents which brought him to Washington, D. C. to work for the Hoover food administration and the Treasury Department.  Pardee was also active in Duluth, Minnesota civic organizations, including the civic council and Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Tidewater Association.  He was secretary of the City Planning department.
