Biographical / Historical

Peace United Church of Christ formally organized in Duluth, Minnesota as St. Paul’s Evangelical Church in 1872; it belonged to the Evangelical Synod of North America. This denomination was in the tradition of the Prussian Evangelical Union, which had united the Reform and Lutheran faiths and St. Paul’s was patterned after the state church of Prussia.

The name of the church has changed three times. In 1934 it was changed to the St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church as a result of the merger of the Evangelical Synod of North America and the Reformed Church in the United States into the Evangelical and Reformed Church. The name was changed in 1957 to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ following the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches into the Church of Christ.

In 1959 the congregation voted to change its name to Peace Church in order to communicate the church’s theme, as symbolized by its “peace” bells. On several occasions the church asked various sources for metals used as weapons of war in order to be melted down to form the bells.
