Biographical / Historical
The Reserve Mining Legal Case deals with the environmental dispute with Reserve Mining Company of Silver Bay, Minnesota, over the Company's policy of dumping taconite tailings into Lake Superior.
Tailings from taconite mining were originally thought to be harmless. By the early 1970s there were complaints that the taconite sediment was killing fish and affecting the quality of Lake Superior as a fresh water source for Duluth and other communities on the north shore of the lake. Environmental organizations, scientists, and lawyers made the case that the tailings not only polluted Lake Superior, but that they contained cummingtonite-grunerite. This substance is found in asbestos, a known cancer-causing agent.
