Scope and Contents

The collection contains approximately 50, 4x6 and 8x10, black and white photographs of Birney Quick’s paintings and drawings; exhibition announcements, invitations, publicity, lectures and speeches; a copy of the 1980 manuscript of Adrift in Aesthetic Latitudes; newsclippings, and a biography and obituary of the artist.

Other Minnesota repositories hold Mr. Quick’s work and should be contacted as this collection may duplicate what is held elsewhere.

Biographical / Historical

Minneapolis Painter, Birney Quick, was born in Proctor Minnesota in 1913. He taught at the College of St. Scholastica before joining the staff of the Minneapolis School of Art in 1946. In 1947, he founded the Grand Marais Art Colony, an outdoor art school that attracted about 150 people each summer. His work is a part of many public and private art collections.
