Biographical / Historical

The Sellwood Building in Duluth housed the home offices of R.S. Patrick, Inc. also known as Patrick Carbon. Duluth was an advantageous location for the home office because of its proximity to the mining industry which used black diamonds for drilling. In 1914 R.S. Patrick had branch offices in New York, Chicago, Seattle, El Paso, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, and Antwerp, Belgium. The business was an importer and cutter of diamonds and precious stones. In the 1920s the business began to concentrate on carbon, or "black diamonds" from Brazil for use in drill bits. Upon Patrick's death the business was incorporated and continued by Warren S. Jamar and Hedwig B. Viking until Jamar's death in 1955 when the firm was liquidated.

Richard Steedman Patrick (1879 or 1880 - March, 1949) was the second husband of Alice Munger Silvey. He was no relation to Duluth clothier Fred A Patrick.
