Biographical / Historical

The Save Lake Superior Association was founded February 22, 1969 in Two Harbors, Minnesota. The purpose of this organization was to promote, in the interest of the general welfare, the education of the public about the urgent need to prevent pollution of Lake Superior. The association promoted education of the public by disseminating all pertinent information on the subject of water pollution and water pollution. Their goals included: promoting the adoption of sound anti-pollution programs; encouraging the enactment of adequate water pollution control and water quality standards by local, state, and federal governments; developing sound conservation practices; and performing any and all acts not prohibited by law which are necessary and incidental to the carrying out of such corporate objectives.

The Save Lake Superior Association had chapters in the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. It was also aligned with other environmental groups such as the Citizens to Save the Superior Shoreline and the Northern Environmental Council.

The main scope of the organization originally centered around the legal case brought against the Reserve Mining Compand its parent companies for the pollution of Lake Superior by the dumping of taconite tailings into the lake. Save Lake Superior Association was a plaintiff in this case as a part of the Northeast Minnesota Intervenors.

Current goals of the organization include: Preserve and protect Lake Superior from air and water pollution; Continue to oppose stocking of exotic game fish in Lake Superior; Support zero discharge of persistent toxic contaminants; Support efforts to eliminate chlorine discharge by the paper industry and others; Protect the integrity of natural land features of the North Shore; Educate the public about pollution and other threats to Lake Superior.
