Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 16 issues of the Top o' the Bottle newsletter, a newspaper clipping with a photo of Frank Schultz on the job, and a full page (32 1/1" x 22 3/4") 1947 newspaper spread from the November 19, 1947 Duluth Herald announcing the Grand Opening of the new Bridgeman's plant at Fourteenth Avenue East and Superior Street. The announcement includes an exterior photograph of the building and interior scenes of the fountain, retail area, and the plant. The newsletters, published by employees of the Bridgeman-Russell Company "to give amusement, to create a closer relationship, and to foster mutual friendship among all," date from April 1937 to May 1939.

Biographical / Historical

Frank J. Schultz (1906-1999) was born in Washburn, Wisconsin and worked for Bridgeman-Russell Company at 1110-1122 West Michigan Street in Duluth from 1924 to 1943 and for Bridgeman Creameries, 1330 E Superior Street, from 1943 until his retirement in 1971. He started out delivering milk for the company, moved into machinery maintenance, and in 1943 became the supervisor of the milk department at Bridgeman Creamery. He was a member of the Stanislaus Kostka Society, Knights of Columbus, the Eagles, and the Teamsters Union.

Jeannette L. Dahl (1913-1993) was born in Superior, Wisconsin. She met her future husband, Frank Schultz, while working in the Bridgeman-Russell ice cream novelties department in 1932. Jeannette's sister Edith Dahl Patshkowski also worked at Bridgeman-Russell. Jeannette was a practical nurse for St. Mary's Hospital, St. Luke's Physical Therapy Department, and did private duty nursing.

Jeannette and Frank Schultz had five children: Frank Thomas, Richard Dale, Jeannette Marie (Maki), Patricia Jean (Waller), and Deborah Mary (Johnson.)
