Scope and Contents

The collection contains a letter book with 35 letters by many people including 6 of Eustache Roussain’s letters to friends, a loose letter made illegible by scribbling over it - the scribbling appears to be Eustache Roussain practicing his signature while the writing underneath is in Ojibwe, a letter from Roussain to Peter Bradshaw, a business license for Roussain to act as a retail dealer and his report as postmaster at Fond du Lac.

Biographical / Historical

Eustache Roussain was the son of Francois Roussain. His father was French and his mother, whose name was either Susan or Zoe, was Ojibwe. He was born in Fond du Lac, Minnesota. Eustache worked for his father, who was an agent at the Astor Trading Post in Fond du Lac. He was educated in Montreal for three years but returned to Fond du Lac where he continued to trap and hunt. He lived there until his death.
