The collection consists of three items:

Orders from the United States War Department that allow accredited commissioners to obtain votes for state officers from soldiers in the regiments of Minnesota Volunteers, this document includes two hand written notations each with the word "yes" and the writer's initials or signature.

The envelope that contained these orders, addressed to Hon. Ansell Smith with the notation (General Orders to pass the lines).

Certificate appointing Ansell Smith as Register of the Land Office at Duluth, Minnesota, signed by President Ulysses S. Grant.

Biographical / Historical

Ansell Smith held the position of Register in the United States Land Office at Duluth from 1869 until 1877. He was a representative to the Minnesota State Legislature for the Chisago County District during the years 1863-64 and 1866. He was the Father-in-law of Mrs. Captain Ed Smith, who was the sister of Mrs. Frank Morris Thomas.
