The collection consists of a letter written in St. Paul to Sheffer's brother George. The letter mentions a trip on the Minnesota river returning from Henderson with "four Sioux passengers from Iowa and a white girl about 17 years old ransomed prisoner to the Indians the prior winter."

Wessel Sheffer lived in St. Paul, Minnesota Territory in 1857 and worked on a steamboat on the Minnesota river. His brother lived in Germantown, Columbia County, New York.
