Biographical / Historical

The State of Minnesota designated the St. Louis River Board as stewards of the St. Louis, Cloquet and Whiteface Rivers with responsibility to represent the best interests of all citizens of the state by planning for managing this watershed. Later known as the St. Louis River Citzens Action Committee, the organization changed its name in 2009 to the St. Louis River Alliance. The St. Louis River Alliance is a local nonprofit organization that is working to oversee activities and practices that are helping to restore, protect and enhance the St. Louis River.

The Alliance’s initial roots were as a Citizen Advisory Committee formed to assist Minnesota and Wisconsin state agencies develop a Remedial Action Plan for the St. Louis River Area of Concern. Created in 1996, as a nonprofit, the St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee’s (SLRCAC) primary focus was to foster communication between public and tribal agencies, industry groups and community stakeholders in the implementation of the Action Plan. Members include individuals, families, businesses, organizations, local and tribal governments – all supporting work to improve the St. Louis River. The management plan goal is protecting the river system’s natural beauty, environment and cleanliness.
