Biographical / Historical

Stearns held a law degree from the University of Michigan, served in the Union Army, 1862-1865, and was a state senator from Olmsted County in Minnesota in 1871. He came to Duluth in 1872 and held the eleventh district judgeship for twenty years.

During his military service he was a 2nd lieutenant in Company F, 9th Minnesota Infantry Volunteers. He led the 39th US Colored Infantry of the 9th Minnesota Volunteers. The 9th Minnesota was a strongly abolitionist unit.

Stearns and his wife, Sarah Burger Stearns, had four children. He moved to California late in life, for his health, and died shortly after relocating there.
