Scope and Contents

The collection contains minutes, 1942–1945; a summary report, 1945; bulletins; committee lists; records of local councils; newsletters; a survey of servicemen’s programs; a victory aide list; reports and bulletins. The newsletters, 1941–1946, include the St. Louis County Civilian Defense newsletter, and newsletters sent to servicemen from the towns of Angora, Albourne, Bear River, Brimson, Canyon, Cherry, Cotton, Embarrass, Gheen, Greary, Homecroft, Iron, Kelsey, Little Swan, Makinen, Melrude, Owens, Pike River, Sax, Sand Lake, Shaw, Sturgeon, Toivola and Zim Minnesota.

Biographical / Historical

The St. Louis County Civilian Defense Council was organized in July, 1941, by order of Governor Harold Stassen. Emil J. Zauft was appointed chairman. The first meeting of the council was held January 12, 1942. The purpose of the organization was to carry on a self protection and war service program until World War II was won. The County Council was established to interpret the state and national requirements as they applied to the rural communities, to direct programs and to serve as an intermediary between St. Louis County and the State Civilian Defense Council.
