Biographical / Historical
Construction began for the Superior Hiking Trail in the mid-1980s, beginning in Duluth, Minnesota and extending 275 miles to the Canadian border. The Superior Hiking Trail is a footpath that largely follows the rocky ridgeline above Lake Superior on Minnesota's North Shore from Duluth to the Canadian border. There are trailhead parking lots every 5-10 miles making it ideal for both day hikes and backpack camping. There are 82 backcountry campsites with no fees, reservations or permits required to hike or camp on the trail. Dogs are allowed on leash only.
The Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA) is a Minnesota non-profit corporation whose members are dedicated to the completion, preservation and promotion of the Superior Hiking Trail. Its office is in Two Harbors, the county seat of Lake County Minnesota. The board meets six times a year and adds board members each May. Membership has grown to over 3200 people, including members in 26 states and Canada.
The Superior Hiking Trail Association sells a complete set of pocket maps for the trail for $2.50. The Association builds, maintains, and manages the trail with the help of hundreds of volunteers.
