Biographical / Historical

A native of Sweden, Swanstrom moved to Chisago County, Minnesota in 1854 and to Oneota around 1856. He was a St. Louis County Commissioner for thirteen years and represented District 29 in the Minnesota House in 1873-1874 and the Minnesota Senate in 1877-1880. Swanstrom was married; his  occupation at the time of his political service was reported as lumberman/mercantile business/former farmer and lumberman. He was affiliated with the Republican Party.

Swanstrom held many county offices and was receiver of the United States Land Office, 1883-1887. A member of one of the first Swedish families in Duluth, he settled in Oneota and worked hard to improve and develop this western area of Duluth, which earned him the title of “father of the West End”.
