Scope and Contents

This collection contains ten student-made publications covering political topics such as the Vietnam War, the status of American Indians, feminism, the cause of the United Farm Workers, the Black Panthers, pollution, and, of course, the content and structure of their own education, as well as poetry and creative writing on various topics. The publications appear to have been generated by students from various Duluth schools (1966, 1968), Woodland Junior High School (1970-1971) and East High School (1971-1972). Publications in the collection are: The Blown Mind, The Blown Mind 2, Declaration of Purpose, Committee on Progressive Education; Committee on Progressive Education Newsletter; Venceremos, volume 1, issues 1-4; Rhythm of the Times, issue 1; The Golden Thread, March, 1972 (3 copies).

Student editors and writers of the publications in this collection include: Ann Dizard, John Hyvarinen, Sue Bogen, Tom Blustin, Margaret Teasley, and Laurie Hertzel.

Biographical / Historical

During the social upheaval of the late 1960s and early 1970s students of all ages began to pay attention to political issues of the time and to question the authority of their school administrators and teachers. Students in Duluth, Minnesota were no exception to this trend. Ann Dizard was a student editors and writers of protest literature at that time. Editors and writers of the publications in this collection include: Ted Tollefson, Arden Johnson, Ann Dizard, John Hyvarinen, Sue Bogen, Tom Blustin, Margaret Teasley, and Laurie Hertzel.
