Biographical / Historical

George R. Stuntz was born in Pennsylvania and came to the Duluth Superior area in 1852 as a government surveyor. He surveyed and explored through Northeastern Minnesota and discovered the Vermilion Range iron ore deposits. Stuntz set up a trading post on Minnesota Point and surveyed roads and railroads in both Wisconsin and Minnesota. He worked to open the Vermilion Range and helped to develop Duluth and St. Louis County.
