Biographical / Historical
The Twentieth Century Club is a philanthropic service-providing women’s organization affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The purpose of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs is “to unite the women’s clubs and like organizations throughout the world for the purpose of mutual benefit, and for the promotion of their common interest in education, philanthropy, public welfare, moral values, civics, and fine arts.” The Duluth, Minnesota club was founded in 1898. It is part of the General Federated Women’s Club of Minnesota.
Club women serve as catalysts who assess the needs of their communities and gather people together to meet the needs of their communities. A representative sample of the organization's focus is in the records of the 1961 campaign for highway safety by promotion of seatbelts. In the early 1980’s the Twentieth Century Club established the “loan a car seat” program at St. Mary’s hospital in Duluth.
