Biographical / Historical
The General Land Office was established in the Treasury Dept. in 1812. In 1849, it was transferred to the Dept. of the Interior. In 1946 the General Land Office and the Grazing Service were consolidated to form the Bureau of Land Management.
U.S. public lands in northeast Minnesota were originally sold in Buchanan, a townsite located on the shore of Lake Superior near the mouth of the Knife River. The U.S. District General Land Office was moved to Portland in 1859. Portland later became a part of the City of Duluth.
