Scope and Contents

The collection contains Frank M. Warren's records from the Isle Royale Citizens’ Committee 1926-1929 including lists of members, minutes, treasurer's reports, and correspondence including letters regarding a burglary on the island; Frank Warren's photographs of moose and other wildlife and views at Isle Royale 1924-1933); limited biographical information on the Warren and Rockwell families; formal family portraits and informal family snapshot photograph albums of the Warren, Rockwell, Conkey, and Morse families, some identified; a number of photograph albums of Frank and Alice's travels in the U. S. and around the world (1923); limited biographical information and correspondence concerning Dakota Indian/Scottish guide John “Jack” Linklater (1866-1933), a Warren family friend; Frank Warren's correspondence with Linklater's grandson Frank Nelson; and print materials regarding Isle Royale National Park (1931-1946); a few daily journals and travel journals of both Alice R. Warren and Frank M. Warren (1910-1948, 1950); a few dance cards and mementos of Alice Rockwell as a young woman; a photograph album of a number of young women that may be from Alice's high school days in Ontario; one scrapbook of adult Alice Warren's committee work in Minneapolis.

Biographical / Historical

Frank Merton Warren (1875 December 1-1948 October 16) and Alice Rockwell Warren (1881-1962, born in Picton, Ontario, Canada) were married in Minneapolis on July7, 1908.  Their home was at 3427 Humboldt Avenue South in Minneapolis.

Alice Rockwell graduated from the Univeristy of Minnesota in 1904, and was a teacher in the public schools until her marriage.  She was the first woman on the University of Minnesota's Board of Regents (1922).

Frank Warren was a gradute of the Univeristy of Minnesota's School of Mines.  He was invovled in mining property in Hibbing, Minnesota as well as banking.  Frank and Alice honeymooned at Frank Warren's Park Place, Rock Harbor, summer home at Isle Royale that was called The Birches.  Frank Warren’s moose photograph(s) were used in published materials on Isle Royale. Frank Warren was the secretary of the Isle Royale Citizens' Committee from 1926 to 1929. His interests in the conservation of land and resources resulted in his active participation in establising Isle Royale as a National Park.

George H. Warren (1845-1927), father of Frank, was initially also an educator serving as a principal in two Minnesota high schools and a superintendent of schools in Faribault, Minnesota.  He was later a lumberman and the author and publisher of The Pioneer Woodsman as he is Related to Lumbering in the Northwest, 1914.  He was instumental in the formation of the University of Minnesota's School of Mines on the Minneapolis campus. Mrs. George H. Warren was Miss Jennie L. Conkey of Faribault, Minnesota.

Alice R. Warren Gaarden established The Warren Lecturship on January 1, 1954, at the University of Minnesota School of Mines and Metallurgy.

Arrangement of Materials:

The Isle Royale Citizens' Committee records and all family papers related to Isle Royale are together.  Travel and family materials are grouped by the creator's name and chronologically arranged.

There are CDs and DVDs of moose photos and some travel albums. They are all in Box 2.
