Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a scrapbook on construction and performances of marionettes and puppets. Head modeling, use of tools such as rasps for shaping wood, joining wood parts, and so forth are depicted and described. Newspaper clippings chronicle regional performances by Wheeler beginning in December 1934 for Windermere Theater. Wheeler is named director. Wheeler partnered with Mrs. David E. Seashore. Puppeteers of Duluth, Superior, and other cities of Minnesota and Wisconsin organized as the Northwest Puppetry Guild.

Biographical / Historical

Dell Hinshaw Wheeler (died 1959) was an artist, a student of David Erickson.  She was the spouse of Daniel Wilbur Wheeler (died 1965, age 68) a Duluth physician and staff at Nopeming Sanitorium.  They had one daughter, Mrs. David Skotte, and a son D.
