Biographical / Historical

William Eric Wickstrom was born in Sweden to John E. and Maria S. Wickstrom, 1906 January 24.  William E. Wickstrom died in Duluth, 1998 July 29, a retired dentist and spouse of Marjorie.

Dr. Wickstrom’s father was involved in the beginnings of organized labor and the Scandinavian Socialist Local (overwhelmingly Swedish). John Wickstrom was a friend of Jack (editor of the Duluth newspaper TRUTH) and Mina Carney, and Bill Wickstom knew them as a 14-year old boy.  John Wickstrom let the Carney’s hide out in their attic home in West Duluth.  William Wickstrom attend the Raleigh elementary school and Denfeld High School. He went to college because a friend asked him to room with him. Bill asked his Mother what he should study: she said, be a dentist, and so he did. He returned to Duluth and set up a dental practice in 1930 which he maintained until he had a stroke in 1981.  His father stayed in Duluth until Maria’s death when he returned to Sweden as a surprise for his sister’s 75th birthday. John Wickstrom remained in Sweden where affordable healthcare was available.
