Biographical / Historical

Long-time Duluth educator, Joseph B. Wiener was a native of Superior, Wisconsin. He attended Superior State Teachers College and received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He moved to Duluth in 1916, and began his teaching career in 1919 at Morgan Park high school. In 1927 he was named principal at Stowe elementary school. He was named assistant superintendent of schools in 1934, and served as superintendent for an interim period in 1943 and 1944. He retired in 1963. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WWI. He was state president of the PTA. He married Fanny and later a second wife, Florence. Fanny and Joseph had a son, Dr. Daniel Wiener, and two daughters, Louise Slomin and Judith Wolfe.
