Biographical / Historical

Julius F. Wolff, Jr., was the son of Margaret (1884-1964) and Julius F. Wolff, Sr. (1886-1976), His brothers were Dr. John M. Wolff, James E. Wolff, and his sister was Mary L. Wolff Stevenson. Julius F. Wolff, Sr. was an engineer for the Oliver Iron Mining Company, a subsidiary of U. S. Steel, from 1907, retiring in 1951. The family was active in the Holy Rosary parish of Duluth. Sister Mary Madeleva Wolff (1887-1964), sister of Julius F. Wolff, Sr., aunt of Julius Wolff, Jr. was a noted poet, lecturer and educator, and former president of St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. Dr. Julius F. Wolff, Jr. retired from the University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Political Science in 1986. He taught in the field of American Government with specialties in American Political Parties and Government and Conservation. Upon his retirement, he was presented the Chancellor's Award for Community Service. Dr. Wolff was an active conservationist and was well-known for his 1979 book The Shipwrecks of Lake Superior which was offered in a second edition in 1990. He was a maritime historian. He taught at UMD for 37 years beginning in 1949. At UMD he was honored with the 1957 Bulldog Award by the Student Association, and the 1970 Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Teaching also from the SA. He earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Notre Dame in 1940, his M. A. in economics in 1947 from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph. D. in political science from the University of Minnesota in 1949. He served in the U. S. Army Reserve in Duluth, achieving the rank of Colonel, from 1949-1975. He was a long time participant in boy scouts leading groups into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for many years. He received awards from the U. S. Forest Service, the U. S. Army, the St. Louis County Historical Society, American Forestry Association, Minnesota Department of Public Welfare, and he was an assistant editor of the quarterly journal of the Great Lakes Historical Society Inland Seas for many years beginning in 1978.
