Historical Note:
The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, a nation-wide and world-wide organization to promote total abstinence and the abolition of liquor manufacture and sale, was organized in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1874 with Mrs. Annie Wittenmyer of Philadelphia as president and Miss Frances E. Willard of Chicago as national secretary. Miss Willard serves as president from 1879 – 1898. The World’s WCTU, the first international organization for women, was founded by Miss Willard in 1883. There are organizations for all age groups. Men may join as honorary members. Membership is based on signing the total abstinence pledge and the payment of annual membership fee. The main purpose of the organization is to protect the home and develop Christian citizenship through individual commitments to total abstinence and thought the abolition of the liquor trade. Official publications include the Union Signal and the Young Crusader; and leaflets, pamphlets, and books published by the national WCTU Publishing House, Evanston, Illinois.
